Should you skip fruit?

If you’re into the fitness world or even if you aren’t I’m sure you’ve heard of the infamous “Keto Diet”. Which everyone tends to see as “I can eat all the bacon I want and lose weight,” right? Welp, sure some people or you may successfully lose some pounds doing this, but typically it ends up with you looking slightly puffy and once you even smell a bagel again that weight is gained right back, plus some. But! Even if you don’t gain weight back and they do Keto perfectly instead of chugging back bacon grease and cheese, you’re missing out. You’re missing out on so much more. Our bodies require 3 macronutrients namely Carbohydrates, Proteins and Fats, and along with these our bodies require micronutrients which we only need small quantities of hence the term yet they have a multitude of functions from aiding in digestion to immune function and brain development. There are those that will argue that Carbohydrates are not essential and we can live our whole lives getting our adequate glucose needs from the other macronutrients, but this isn’t at all practical nor is it exceptionally healthy. Think of the micronutrients as your vitamins and minerals which many of us unnecessarily supplement without knowing what our bodies actually are needing. If we are eating a well balanced, whole foods (not the market) based diet then we shouldn’t have to supplement with vitamin pills made in a lab. How can someone focusing on high fat intake and limiting their carbohydrate intake get these beneficial nutrients if even fruit and lots of vegetables are off the table because #carbs? The short answer is that they can’t, and that in reality Keto is not meant for most of the population. It was a diet intended specifically for the medical treatment of children with epilepsy, and not for a quick fix weight loss regime. So I’m talking to you, girls who feel they need to lose 10 pounds to hit the beach or pool, or mom who has had a hard time getting “back on track” with her nutrition since the kids and the business of life, or you bachelor who is trying to get “healthy” or “fit” to snag a date, do not buy into this fad. Eat a diet consisting of whole and unrefined food, meats and vegetables, nuts and seeds, little starch and no sugar to be precise and in the words of Greg Glassman. If you do that, and you eat quantities which support your activity and not body fat to paraphrase Mr. Glassman again, you will see far better results not only physically but mentally and internally as well. And if you’re exercising carbohydrates can be your best friend, though they aren’t created equal, so eat low glycemic carbohydrates, or in layman’s terms carbohydrates which slowly release energy so that you don’t get that 2 o’clock crash, namely your vegetables. Eating this way will ensure that you are getting everything you need from your food, it will ensure that you never feel deprived, and it will ensure that you don’t end up in the grasps of the traps of the fitness industry. I don’t know about you guys but any “diet” which tells me I can’t have berries or an apple (insert your own favorite fruit) is not one that I could stay on for long….
