The power of walking

“Ugh I have to get to the gym.”

“I really need to start exercising everyday.”

“I need to start lifting weights.”

What if we just begin with moving more in general? If you wore a pedometer for a day, and just went about your normal day, how many steps do you think you would achieve?

Let’s put it into perspective so we don’t overestimate here, with these common professions and their average steps:

  • Teacher – 12,564
  • Office Worker – 7,570
  • Nurse – 7,888
  • Call Center Associate – 6,618

On average Americans take around 5,517 steps a day out of the 10,000 recommended steps. Why do these matter? What is walking going to do?

First off, walking is free. We can all get outside and enjoy the weather on beautiful days. Bring the dog out and go for a nice stroll. You need no equipment, no gym membership. You just need yourself and a place to walk. That can be circles around your yard. Around your community. Anywhere. Why not utilize what we have aorund us?

By simply adding a little more movement to your day you are improving your heart health, your energy levels, and your mood. Walking is a great way to get in a little extra calorie burn, fat burn and the best part, a great way to clear your mind and give you time to think and just be present with yourself.

Tips For Walking

Walk for at least 30 minutes if and when you can.

Walk at a brisk pace, get your heart rate up a little. Or mix it up using intervals. I love using my Peloton App for walking exercises outdoors! For just $12.99 a month I have access to so many workouts!

Add in a weighted vest if walking alone is too easy.

Throw in some bodyweight training movements if you feel up to it.

  • Squats
  • Lunges

More muscle mass means more calories burned! Body weight movement is a great place to start!

Walk with friends or pets! The more the merrier!
